April 21st, 2021 by

Called the City with Soul because it’s been home to so many blues, jazz, and gospel musicians, Jackson, Mississippi, offers countless options for fun and romantic dates. In this cultural center of arts and history, you’ll find many entertainment, leisure, and dining choices that will give you quality time together. Whether you want to explore museums or national landmarks, do some shopping and dining, or relax while watching live theater or musical performances, all these activities are easily accessible in and around Jackson. Whenever you can get some time away from the kids, here are some great ideas for you and your partner to try out.

The Fondren District

Hip, diverse, artsy, and fun, The Fondren District is a charming and eclectic area overflowing with music and visual arts, entertainment, shopping, and dining. This is one of Jackson’s most popular entertainment locations, and the friendly and creative atmosphere makes it a don’t-miss destination.

Spend the day together as you explore the many shops and locally owned boutiques in Fondren or go on a trolley ride. Have a bit of local fare at one of the many coffee shops, bars, bakeries, or restaurants as you bask in the joy and energy of the community, and then spend the evening mingling with artists and musicians as the district nightlife kicks up.

LeFleur’s Bluff State Park

Who said date night has to start at night? Plan a romantic picnic lunch at LaFleur’s Bluff State Park, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the luxurious 305 acres and bring your inner child out to play. After lunch, spend some couple time fishing, hiking, or golfing at the nine-hole golf course and driving range. This beautiful, spacious setting allows for some wonderful outside recreation and offers welcome respite from the chaos of daily life.

New Stage Theatre

Couples who love the performing arts will enjoy New Stage Theatre. With seating for more than 300 people, the theater hosts a variety of plays and events. The standard season consists of five plays, along with a holiday show, a SchoolFest matinee, and a special performance featuring only local children in the summer camp program. A second season, the Unframed at New Stage Theatre Series, presents plays directed and performed by local.

Duling Hall

Built in 1928, Duling Hall was originally an elementary school featuring a beautiful brick structure and stained glass windows. Today, Duling Hall has a reputation for being the best live music venue in Jackson. Hosting a wide selection of genres and performances, Duling Hall is sure to have an event that appeals to you both. Some past performances featured the Mississippi Opera, The Flaming Lips, Taj Mahal, Zappa Plays Zappa, and Mississippi blues great Bobby Rush. Duling Hall is close to many upscale restaurants, so you and your date can share a romantic meal before or after the show. The hall is also open for booking engagements and is a popular location for weddings and corporate events.

Mississippi Museum of Art

The Mississippi Museum of Art, founded in 1978, is the largest public museum in Mississippi. The museum features paintings, sketches, photographs, sculptures, and more. In addition to sharing the rich history and culture of Mississippi, the museum also features regional artists’ work and at times offers live garden performances, art film screenings, and art classes. Outside, the flower garden offers space for a picnic or to recharge in nature. You can enjoy a wonderful unique touch by visiting the small art stations in some of the gallery rooms, where museum guests can create their own artistic works to display.

Eudora Welty House & Garden

Home of Pulitzer Prize-winning American author Eudora Welty, the Eudora Welty House & Garden is a National Historic Landmark. The house where Welty wrote her stories is available to tour, and you and your sweetheart can also explore the beautiful gardens designed by her mother. In addition to the house and gardens, a museum and visitor center displays some of Welty’s artifacts and awards, including the Pulitzer Prize. Writers, artists, and other creatives will be awed and inspired by the achievements and legacy of this wonderful American author.

Old Capitol Museum

Another National Historic Landmark, the Old Capitol Museum is one of Mississippi’s oldest historic buildings and is considered the most historic. Built in 1839, the Greek Revival style of architecture and giant copper dome make the Old Capitol one of Mississippi’s most impressive buildings to this day. When the new Capitol building opened in the early part of the 20th century, the Old Capitol was converted into a museum, and today it showcases state and government history. You’ll enjoy viewing the beautiful features while strolling with your partner.

The Oaks House Museum

Also known as The Boyd House, since it was the former home of Jackson Mayor James H. Boyd and his family, The Oaks House Museum is a Mississippi Landmark and one of the oldest buildings in Jackson. Another Greek Revival building, this is one of the few buildings to have survived the burning of Jackson during the Civil War. Boyd served four terms as mayor of Jackson in the mid-1800s, and he was an alderman in 1863 at the time Union forces burned the city of Jackson. You can explore several beautifully furnished rooms featuring genuine Mayor Boyd-era furniture and visit a photo-friendly garden outside.
