As the capital city of Mississippi, Jackson has many attractions to capture your attention, from historical landmarks to the arts, and more. A place filled with soul, it’s a great weekend getaway, and its Southern roots definitely spread to the city’s food. We all know pizza hits the spot, no matter where you are. Jackson, Mississippi, is no different. For your next meal here in Jackson, Herrin-Gear INFINITI would like to recommend four of the best pizzerias in town.
The Pizza Shack

Providing quality pizza with the freshest ingredients was a long-term goal of Michael Parker and Larry Emmett, owners of the Pizza Shack in Jackson. This 10-year-old pizzeria, which is rumored to have legendary cheese sticks, also offers appetizers, salads, and custom pizzas and sandwiches. Though the venue is small and humble, it is colorful, and the customers are more like family.
Every ingredient is prepared fresh daily, and this little vendor boasts classic items and unique fare. For a reasonable price, you can tempt your taste buds with traditional favorites or try something more daring, like the Chicken Curry Delight, a combination of traditional curry, smoked gouda, curry chicken, mozzarella, peppers and onions, and fire-roasted pepper. The Cajun Joe, named after a former employee, is a delight that features andouille sausage, Cajun marinara, seasoned chicken, green and red peppers, and red onion. Whether you want to try one of these unique creations or create your own, you won’t regret ordering from The Pizza Shack.
Open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. on Sundays.
Location: 925 E Fortification St., Jackson

Soulshine Pizza Factory
Soulshine Pizza Factory is known for gourmet pizzas, po’boys, and a perfect vibe. With a name inspired by a song by the Allman Brothers Band, Soulshine Pizza Factory has a groovy blues environment that you can feel in every corner and with every menu item. If your timing is right, Soulshine has some great lunch deals for you to consider. If you don’t want to stay and take in the atmosphere, this pizza factory offers a take and bake pizza option so you can enjoy the groove from home.
While you’re in the South, expect to have some barbeque. Soulshine Pizza Factory brings it to you on the Boss Hawg pizza, complete with barbecue sauce, pulled pork, pineapple, onion, mozzarella, and pepper jack cheese. If pork isn’t to your liking, try the Mississippian, which comes with barbecue sauce, pulled and grilled chicken, smoked bacon, mozzarella, and pepper jack. Another little Southern dish you can get here is Soulshine’s red beans and rice with smoked sausage.
Save room for dessert and get some Slap Yo’ Momma Bread Puddin’, made from scratch and served with a New Orleans-style bourbon sauce. There is no reason to go hungry when you visit the Soulshine Pizza Factory. They are open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday.

Sal and Mookie’s
Sal and Mookie’s is the perfect place if you want New York-style pizza in Jackson. This authentic Italian-themed pizzeria is ranked at the top of the list for excellence. Here, you can get brick-oven pizzas loaded with the best quality toppings around. Sal and Mookie’s serves more than pizza, though. The main dining area surrounds a delightful ice cream parlor where you can order all your favorite flavors. This is a great place to host your next special event, or should you need to have food catered.
Close to the Jackson Zoo and the Mississippi Children’s Museum, Sal and Mookie’s is a great spot for families and children. But, don’t worry, they haven’t forgotten about the parents. From a bar that will make you feel you’re on vacation, adults can grab a local or regional craft beer or a custom-made cocktail. Enjoy your drink on the laid-back patio setting or in an adult-only lounge. All of Sal and Mookie’s offerings make this a solid option for your next special outing in Jackson.

Newk’s Eatery
Not a lot of pizza places will move your heart as well as satisfy your palate. In response to her cancer diagnosis, Lori Newcomb, the late wife of Newk’s Eatery co-founder, raised more than $1 million for cancer research. She also inspired some of the restaurant’s most popular recipes, such as the Shrimp & Avocado Salad and a seasonal Thai Chicken Soup, which include cancer-fighting ingredients. It’s clear that the mission of Newk’s includes creating opportunities for better health as well as for good food. This casual venue offers a selection of soups, salads, and sandwiches, in addition to their family recipe pizzas. With meats sliced and dressings made in-house, you’ll experience the quality of Newk’s in every bite.
While you’re at Newk’s, consider sampling one of the kettle-batch soups with your pizza; the selections change daily but pair perfectly with a hot slice of pizza. Try a hand-crafted specialty pizza or make your own with traditional toppings. For those of you in a hurry or not overly hungry, Newk’s will take care of you with one of their grab-and-go items: soups, side proteins, sandwiches, etc. If you need something sweet, Newk’s offers a wide variety of desserts, including whole cakes. Whatever you need to satisfy the craving, this little eatery has it. For a reasonable price, you can experience hospitality and quality.
