Mississippi Museum of Art

The Mississippi Museum of Art should be on any list for those traveling to the area. The facility is known as the “museum without walls” because of the modern architecture within the building. The floor plan allows visitors to open their minds, and walk into an inviting space to interact with the art freely. The galleries are all elaborate and offer compelling exhibits with plenty of history and culture behind them.

You can visit the museum on Thursday, Friday or Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. While there is always a free exhibit area, you can also purchase tickets to the traveling exhibits. Currently, the exhibit for purchase is called Piercing the Inner Wall.

Mississippi Museum of Natural Science

Those who love nature will adore the Mississippi of Natural Science where you can see the plant and wildlife that is native to the state. There are six nature trails lined with beautiful plants and tall trees and kids often like the animal species in the aquarium, too. There are often fun special events, like the current Egg-ceptional Egg Game, and summer camps are a good time for kids to get outdoors and discover nature in the area.

Timed arrivals are being scheduled at the museum right now and with your reservation, you can visit Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 5 p.m, Saturday from 9 a.m to 5 p.m, or Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets cost $6 for adults and $4 for youth ages three to 18. Kids under the age of three are free and senior citizens over the age of 60 are $5.

Mississippi Children’s Museum

Kids always look forward to the fun day they are going to have when the family heads to the Mississippi Children’s Museum where their motto is “We Take Fun Seriously.” The large showroom has galleries where kids can interact with others and learn as they plan. The museum is a great place to go on a rainy day, or even on a day that is too hot to play around outside. With a full calendar of events, families can visit on certain days to enjoy even more specialized fun.

Admission is $10 per person, but kids under the age of one are free. Families can explore the fun Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.

The Oaks House Museum

If you like history, you can’t find anything with as much as the Oak House Museum in this area. “The Oaks,” as it is often called is one of the oldest museums in Jackson. The structure survived the town’s burning during the Civil War, so you know it’s been around for a long time. When visiting, you can learn about the four-time mayor, James Harvey Boyd. It’s also interesting to get a look at what life was like for a middle-class family in Mississippi during the mid-19th century. The farmstead houses a Greek Revivial-style museum with plenty to show.

Tours are given by appointment only and advance reservations are required. The last tours start at 2:15 p.m. daily. Adults cost $4.50 while children are $3.50 and seniors get a break on entry for just $4. There are also discounts for larger groups as well as AAA members.

The Eudora Welty House

This National Historic Landmark is a great place for any bookworm to visit as it displays the literary masterpieces of the late Eudora Welty. When the internationally acclaimed author left her home to the state of Mississippi, it was turned into a museum that anyone can visit. The Eudora Welty House is lined with books from Welt herself as well as other great novelists from the 20th century.

Visitors are welcome to the Education and Visitors Center from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. There are tours at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. during the week and at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m on the weekend. Tours take at least one hour, but watching the orientation film, exhibits, and items in the museum shop will extend the visit even longer. Adults cost $10 and students are $5. Children under the age of 6 are gree while seniors over 60, teachers, and military are $8.

Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Museum

If you like to hear about farming and the different methods used, this is the location for you. The Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Museum takes you through the deep roots of Jackson farming with 27 buildings, and several green spaces. The natural beauty of the Victory Garden is reason enough to visit.

Visit the museum Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $5 per adult or $4 for kids ages 3-17.
